About Astrology
We all try to predict what awaits us in the future. We have many ways to do so - there are officially recognized specialists who constantly tell us about the future: meteorologists, economists, futurologists, and analysts of various fields, but there are also other types of specialists - clairvoyants, magicians, fortune tellers, astrologers. The "Astrological Forecasts" sections in newspapers and magazines are trendy in almost all countries. Interest in astrology persists despite ongoing debates on the subject. However, the level of these debates is relatively low and can usually be summarized by one question: "Can astrology be trusted?". Some forget that astrology is not related to belief - that's what religion is for - it's simply a system of knowledge that has been collected and researched for thousands of years.
Astrology is one of the sciences about human beings, describing and classifying their personality traits, behavior patterns, and reactions to various life situations and helping to choose the optimal path for personal development and improvement. In other words, astrology is an art that allows a person to understand themselves better. After all, this has been considered one of the most challenging tasks since ancient times.
Today, based on many archaeological and historical sources, we can talk about the development of this ancient and unique science. It is ancient because the development of astrological thought dates back more than three thousand years. Many sources (for example, ancient India) indicate an extended period - five thousand years and more. This science can be considered universal because of its evolution - now there is no need to use various medieval techniques, and more modern ones replace ancient concepts - astrology evolves but remains the exact science about humans and their possibilities.
Thus, the reasons for the emergence of astrology are entirely natural: from birth, a person notices the change of day and night, the phases of the Moon, and the seasons also change constantly, and taking this into account, one can plan one's life. Travelers and hunters used stars and the Sun to plan their routes, while farmers observed how nature reacted to the rhythms of the Moon and the Sun. Similarly, the calendar was invented - the sky demonstrated incredible order and periodicity, commanded respect, and gave humans a point of reference in life entirely of chaos and anxiety.
The tradition of observing the sky was passed down from generation to generation, providing people with a lot of new information. The strict periodicity of certain celestial phenomena allowed them to be predicted and to plan for the future - to prepare for sowing or harvesting, river flooding, or the arrival of a caravan. After some time, astrologers divided the celestial vault into 12 signs, 27 lunar stations, and 360 degrees - this was necessary for more accurate calculations.
The most important discovery of ancient people was the distribution of stars into "moving" and "fixed." You already understand that we are talking about planets visible from Earth as bright stars. However, while ordinary stars never move and create a network of constellations, planets, in turn, move across the celestial vault at different speeds. This discovery so affected ancient sky observers that they named these "moving" stars after gods and endowed them with human traits and the power to control certain natural phenomena.
The Sun and the Moon were worshiped as providers of life on Earth, as the god of day and the goddess of night. We would now say that primitive was how people thought then. In ancient myths and legends, gods often descended from the sky to intervene in earthly affairs - just remember the legends of ancient Greece. People believed that celestial phenomena were signs or omens of these events. Astrologers noticed incredible coincidences between what was happening on Earth and in the sky. Comets and solar eclipses accompanied defeats in wars and famine. Saturn's particular position marked the beginning of epidemics, and the unique position of Jupiter determined the change of rulers and kings. In this way, the first steps in astrological research were taken.
The path of astrology was paved through the most developed ancient civilizations and countries - from Babylon to Egypt, further to ancient Greece and the Roman Empire - everywhere, where cities were created and people were educated. With the advent of Christianity, astrology fell out of favor, but the Arab world took over the relay. It is known that many Eastern rulers favored astrology, just like all other sciences of that time.
Chinese and Indian astrology deserve special mention; they carefully preserve all the ancient traditions before our era. The second flourishing of astrology in Europe happened during the Middle Ages. It would be hard to find a monarch or aristocrat in Europe who did not seek advice from an astrologer. Over time, the profession of the astrologer became very respected, and astrology lectures at universities were held alongside those of mathematics and physics.
Thus, astrology has reached our times through periods of prosperity and obscurity. Such renowned scientists as the astronomer Tycho Brahe, physician Michel de Nostradamus, philosophers Bacon and Spinoza, mathematician Johannes Kepler, and physicist Isaac Newton successfully applied astrological knowledge and tried to expand this science. But the true apogee of this ancient science was in the 19th-20th centuries, when the Western world began to rediscover the mystical secrets of the East and innovations in the field of psychology, allowing a move away from an overly materialistic view of humans and their psyche. The famous psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, who studied this science and did not hesitate to seek help from a horoscope in particularly complex patient cases, played a significant role in validating astrological theories.
Today, astrology still attracts new proponents. Various astrological associations, communities, and schools thrive around the world. The most popular branches of modern astrology include:
- Natal - describes a person's horoscope, considering potentials given at birth;
- Synastry - focuses on interpersonal relationships, or in other words, marital astrology;
- Medical - deals with health and disease issues, requiring the highest level of responsibility;
- Financial or business - explores trends in business life;
- Mundane - astrology of world events and states;
- Horary - an ancient system predicting the future, almost allowing for miracles;
- Astropsychology - quite popular in the West, a branch intersecting two sciences, revealing the human psyche;
- Astrometeorology - an astrological forecasting variant that, according to some opinions, surpasses standard weather forecasting.
These are just the best-known branches of astrological science. There are also more esoteric branches, such as esoteric astrology, which applies non-classical interpretations to all horoscope elements. Many beginners get acquainted with astrology through simple Sun horoscopes based on the Zodiac, and later, most study this science much more thoroughly. Many educated people accuse astrologers of debasing this full-fledged science, saying one should remember the specific Zodiac signs. Indeed, upon reflection, it becomes apparent that half a billion people (the number of representatives of one Zodiac sign on Earth) cannot have the same character, and the events predicted by weekly horoscopes will not be the same for everyone. All of this seems logical. However, take your time to conclude about the detriment of such astrological work.
